The legislative decree 14 March 2011 n. 23 gave the possibility to Italian municipalities to set up a tourist tax. This tax is paid by tourists directly to the accommodation (Hotel, B&B, Resort …). The cost depend on the location, type and stars of the accomodation. It is normally not included in the room rate because it could changes based on the wishes and needs of the municipality.

Below you will find the tables about the amount of the tourist/city tax in high and low season.

As you have probably already noticed, the low season in Venice is particularly short (only the month of January) and the city/tourist tax goes from € 0.70 to € 5.10 in high season and from € 0.50 to € 3.50 in low season. Two people that wants to spend 2 nights in Venice in a 3-stars hotel, will pay a total of € 14.00 if the hotel is located in Venice or € 9.60 if it is located on the mainland. These amounts are to be added to the cost of the room which is usually quite high. This is not a low price and you risk to find a bad surprise at the end of your stay.

Children: between 0 and 9 years are free of charge, while from 10 to 16 years a 50% discount will be applied.

There is also a way to refuse to pay the tourist/city tax. Below you will find the link to download the form. Youl will read about 30% penalty fee in case of due payment omission but, in my experience, it is very difficult that it is applied, specially with foreign tourist.
