SAN MARCO BELL TOWER
– Short historical notes: The bell tower of San Marco is one of the most important symbols of the city of Venice. The Venetians affectionately call it “El parón de casa” (The landlord) and is one of the main monuments of Venice. The Bell tower base is 12 meters per side. The height of the bell tower is 98.5 meters (one of the highest in Italy). The final part of the bell tower is formed by the arched bell cell, over this cell you can see the Venice lions and female figures of Venice (Giustizia), over these rapresentations you can see a pyramidal cusp and, finally, on the top of this cusp you can see the golden statue of the archangel Gabriel that is on a rotating platform (it move with the wind). The construction of the bell tower took place between the IX and XIV centuries on the imitation of the bell tower of Aquileia. Over the years it was damaged and repaired several times. Normally it was damaged by lightning (actually it seems a big lightning rod). But the most significant event was the collapse of the bell tower at 9:47 am in 1902 due to incorrect works on the exterior wall. Fortunately there were no victims. The bell tower was rebuilt the same as before (the topic used, was “Where was and how it was”) and was inaugurated in 1912. Click here to view the official page of the history of San Marco bell tower. To reach the top of the bell tower there is an elevator (THERE ARE NO STAIRS). Even today it is one of the most evocative places in Venice. You will enjoy a unique and breathtaking view.
